Young Scientists from BSMU — Winners of the International Competition for the Best Youth Works

The International Competition for the Best Youth Works among students and young scientists was held in a hybrid format as part of the Somato‑Neurology 2026 conference on 26 February 2026. The event took place in the conference hall of the Rostov State Medical University, with online connections across three sections, and included both oral and poster presentations. Participants had the opportunity to present their work in either Russian or English, sharing either a clinical case or the results of a research project.

The main organisers of the event were Bashkir, Rostov, and Samarkand Medical Universities. A total of 18 works were selected for the final programme, including 5 from the Department of Neurology at Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU).

An independent and rigorous jury highly appreciated the presentations by students and residents from our university:

First place was rightfully awarded to fourth‑year student Swaraj Pund from India, who delivered an outstanding presentation in English about a patient with progressive supranuclear palsy. He observed the patient together with Fatikha Makhmutova (fourth‑year student and head of the student scientific circle at the Department of Neurology) at the BSMU Clinic.

Second place went to a work presented by first‑year resident Elvira Valitova on botulinum toxin therapy in the preoperative preparation of patients with dystonia of the anterior abdominal wall muscles prior to hernia repair. The co‑author was sixth‑year student Alsu Rakhimova.

Third place was awarded to our scientific circle members Aliya Asylgareeva and Milyausha Nizamova for their report on the topic relevant to any medical university: “The Prevalence and Structure of Psychosomatic Neurological Symptoms among Medical Students during Periods of High Academic Load”.

With a very small margin, fourth place was given for the description of a personal observation of a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, confirmed by molecular genetic diagnostic methods. The work was presented by resident Hussein Obidov, who, together with sixth‑year medical faculty student Alexander Lyutsius, not only demonstrated the clinical picture of the disease but also proposed the most up‑to‑date methods of care for this case.

All the presented works were carried out under the supervision of Professor Leila Akhmadeeva and will be published in the conference proceedings, which will be included in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI). Co‑supervisors of the competition participants were teachers and staff members of the BSMU Clinic: resuscitation specialist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Rais Gizatullin; radiologist and neurologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Rinat Gizatullin; and surgeon Nail Allayarov.

We sincerely congratulate everyone who presented their works at the competition and thank our wonderful colleagues from Rostov, who initiate this event every year — Professors Valeriy Efremov and Zoya Goncharova, as well as Associate Professor Maxim Dmitriev — and also the members of the international organising committee.

Currently, BSMU is accepting submissions for the English‑language student competition “Pain, Inflammation, Neurodegeneration”, organised by our university and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The winner will give an in‑person oral presentation at the eponymous international interdisciplinary scientific and practical conference chaired by Professor Ildar Lutfarakhmanov on 24 March 2026 at the House of the Scientific and Educational Centre (Ufa, Kirova Street 15).
