Folk Maslenitsa festivities were held on a grand scale at Bashkir State Medical University. Staff members, teachers, and students gathered at the university campus to celebrate one of the warmest and most joyful holidays in the Russian folk calendar — Maslenitsa.
Creative groups from BSMU put on a colourful fairy‑tale performance. Talented performers delighted guests with lively songs and witty chastooshkas (short folk ditties), and game areas with folk amusements and contests were open to everyone, where participants could show their agility, quick wit, and team spirit.
“Today, our university is celebrating Maslenitsa. We believe that this holiday unites people, lifts their mood, and boosts patriotic spirit. International students are actively celebrating with us. Coming from other countries, they find it hard to adapt to our culture. Events like this show that we are an open and warm‑hearted people. For Russian students, Maslenitsa is an opportunity to take a breather and see off the passing winter in style,” event participants said.
The field kitchen zone became a real attraction. Teachers and students enjoyed trying real military‑style porridge, cooked according to army recipes, and treated themselves to the main symbol of Maslenitsa — golden‑brown pancakes. Specialists from the BSMU Tactical Medicine Centre held masterclasses for the students.
International students took part in the celebrations with genuine interest. For many, it was the first opportunity to truly experience Russian cultural traditions.
“We celebrate Maslenitsa at the university every year. Today, students from different countries have gathered at the festival. It’s cold today, but the festival atmosphere, chatting with friends and teachers, warms us up,” Hassan Abdallah, a student at the Medical Faculty from Lebanon, said.
BSMU values not only scientific achievements but also cultural traditions that bring people together. For international students, the holiday was a warm and vibrant introduction to Russian culture — through play, taste, and shared fun.
