In the laboratory of molecular hybrids of BSMU at the Interuniversity Student Campus, peptides and bioconjugates are being developed, which are of practical importance for medicine, chemistry, biology and biotechnology. The peptide synthesizer functioning in the BSMU laboratory opens up new opportunities for the creation of medicine.
"Today, one of the urgent tasks in which medical universities participate is to ensure technological leadership, the introduction of new technologies for import substitution, the release of new medical equipment and medicine. In the scientific laboratories of BSMU, research is carried out in all sections of medical chemistry - from the most basic technologies of organic and inorganic synthesis to technologies of peptide synthesis, vaccine production. Young scientists and graduate students are studying technologies for nuclear fusion, chelator synthesis, tracers - the most advanced molecules that should enter the Russian market today and tomorrow. This is very important for our university, because we are becoming not only a university producing personnel for healthcare, but also a university-developer of new directions, new knowledge, new Russian technologies," Rector of the
Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Valentin Pavlov.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that play a key role in biological processes. They are the building blocks of proteins and are involved in the regulation of multiple physiological functions in the human body.
Peptides are an important class of biomolecules with multiple functions and applications. Modern methods for their synthesis open up new horizons for the development of therapeutic agents. Thanks to the Priority-2030 development program, the University managed to purchase a modern peptide synthesizer.
The equipment automatically allows the synthesis of biomolecules - oligopeptides and polypeptides. If a person manually conducts synthesis, it takes, depending on the method used, from 7 days or more. The peptide synthesizer is able to perform the same functions in 1-3 days with higher efficiency.
"The task of the laboratory is not just to carry out the synthesis of peptides, but to obtain them using an engineering approach. Based on the methods of biology and chemistry, we will work on modifying and transforming these chains of amino acids so that peptides begin to show the functions and properties that we need for use in therapy. The tasks of our laboratory also include the synthesis of oligopepdides, which can be used as ligands (binding molecule) for targeted drug delivery, while we have other projects. The very first project that we began to implement is the search for chelators of the peptide nature of pharmaceutically important metals," Emil Yamansarov, head of the laboratory of molecular hybrids said .
The new equipment is unique for our republic, earlier peptide synthesizers were completely absent in the region. Today in Russia there are only 3 such devices.
The uniqueness of this equipment is that the synthesizer itself is combined with a microwave emitter - a solid-phase microwave automatic peptide synthesis system. It is this synthesizer that allows you to speed up the process and get the final product with a more efficient result.
"On the basis of the Bashkir State Medical University, we, young scientists, get the opportunity to implement promising research projects with the help of new tools that were previously unavailable in the region. Our scientific teams were forced to turn to scientific laboratories from other regions, universities and countries. Now we can do all this on our site," Emil Yamansarov said.
