Multidisciplinary team of doctors from BSMU Clinic has put simultaneous operations on stream

Simultaneous operations are operations that are performed simultaneously or sequentially on two or more organs for their independent diseases.

On 9 September 2020, the Oncology department of BSMU Clinic performed a complex operation – nephrectomy with thrombectomy from the inferior vena cava and right atrium.

The multidisciplinary team of cardiac surgeons and oncologists performed the operation under the supervision of Valentin N. Pavlov, rector of Bashkir State Medical University, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The operation was performed on a 63-year-old patient who was diagnosed with a tumor thrombus in addition to kidney cancer.

The patient underwent two operations simultaneously: removal of the affected kidney and removal of a tumor clot from the right atrial cavity.

- Thanks to the coordinated work of the multidisciplinary team reduces the time of the operation, as well as the number of days in hospital by reducing postoperative period required for recovery of the patient, - said Valentin Pavlov. - Previously, such operations were performed in stages, over several hospitalizations with an interval of 1-2 months.

The operation took 2 hours. The patient is expected to leave the hospital on the 6th day after the operation.

On September 11, 2020, a left nephrectomy was performed with a thrombectomy from the inferior vena cava.
