In Bashkortostan doctors for the first time removed the tumor using 3D-modeling

Before surgery, using the computer tomography data, the doctors produced a model of the tumorous kidney in order to examine it, the University press-service reported.

That gave the surgeons the opportunity to calculate accurately the tactics of the operation.

Moreover, the case, as told in the Clinic, was very difficult. Doctors found a 40-year-old patient with cancer of both kidneys. On the one hand, tomography showed that the tumor was especially large. In such cases, it is usually removed together with the diseased organ.

- Production of 3D-model printed on the printer, helped surgeons to determine the exact boundaries of the tumor and save both kidneys, removing only the affected areas, —the Clinic press service informed.

The rector of the Bashkir State Medical University, chief urologist of the Volga Federal district and the Republic of Bashkortostan, Professor Valentin N. Pavlov, conducted that complex surgery.
